THE PRACTICE OF THE SACRAMENTAL VISION OF ELWOOD ST KILDA WEST PARISH

The practicalities around accessing the Sacraments

Celebrating the Sacraments is as much about celebrating the whole person as it is about participating in religious rituals. Participating in the sacraments is about living in a way that honours the relationships we have with one another – and honours God’s involvement in our everyday experience.

Baptism for Infants and Pre-school age children:

  • Parents contact the Parish Team for an initial conversation (Ph: 95316120).
  • Parents attend a Preparation evening (usually held the 2nd Tuesday each month at the Parish House, 7.30pm, at 2 Normandy Rd, Elwood)
  • Parents and child attend a Parish Mass prior to the Baptism for a Baptism Welcome (presentation of stole and candle, anointing and blessing of child)
  • The celebration of the Baptism – can be at 12.30pm, on the last Sunday of the month at St. Columba’s, or at any parish Mass (Saturdays 6pm, Sundays 9am (St. Columba’s) or 11am (Sacred Heart). Bookings for Baptism are made by negotiation with a member of the Parish Team.

RCIC (Children seeking the sacraments of Initiation):

  • Parents contact the Catechist co-ordinator via the Parish House (Ph: 95316120) for an initial conversation. For St. Columba’s Parish Schoolchildren, contact the Religious Education Coordinator (Ph: 95316560)
  • Work with your child through a program to prepare them for the Sacraments of Initiation.

Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation:

  • Parents respond initially to information regarding the beginning of the preparation period through the Parish and School bulletins or information letters sent home to families.
  • Parents contact the Parish Office (95316120) to book their place in parent discussion groups, and to register their child for one of the Sacramental celebrations.

RCIA (Adults seeking to join the Catholic community):

  • An initial conversation with the Parish priest and/or Pastoral Associate. Contact can be made after any Parish Mass or by calling the Parish House (Ph: 95316120)
  • Participate in regular gatherings with the RCIA team to enquire into then explore faith questions. This includes joining the parish at Sunday Mass to get to know the community.
  • Participate in various worship services throughout the journey, especially at Sunday Mass.
